Tips for Buying Second Hand Tyres in The Gold Coast
Purchasing second hand tyres can be a minefield if you don’t know what you are looking for.
Second hand tyres have many benefits including being very cost effective for the average motorist.
Purchasing new tyres for your vehicle is not always necessary as you can find great deals on the Gold Coast for discount tyres and second hand tyres.
You just need to know what to look for to guarantee longevity of the tyre and the safety of your vehicle.
Here are our top tips to help you get the best second hand tyres on the Gold Coast:
Check Tyre Tread Depth
By examining the depth of a second hand tyre with a depth gauge you can usually gain an idea as to the life left in the tyre.
If your tyres tread is low, the tyres won’t last very long and you need to consider whether it is worth having them fitted.
Check all around the surface of the tyre tread.
Too much or unusual wear will show as you will be able to see the actual cords in the tyre.
If you see any sort of steel wire in the tyre, not only is it not a good potential purchase it is dangerous.
Feel The Tyre
If you run your hand over the tread and sidewall and can feel any bumps or irregularities then this is also an indicator of a poor quality second hand tyre.
This means that the tyre has more wear and tear which can cause belt separation, which once again is very dangerous.
In addition, look for anywhere where parts of the rubber are missing from the beads (the part of the rubber that makes contact with the wheel).
Damage to this can prevent the tyre and the wheel from sealing together and is known as bead chunking.
Look for previous punctures in the tyre.
This in itself is not a problem if it has been repaired properly which can be identified as a full patch on the tyre inside.
We would personally avoid repairs which just show the hole has been plugged.
In addition, although patch repaired punctures are quite safe and it isn’t unusual on the Gold Coast for discounted tyres or used tyres to have one.
If the patch is quite large, we would rather look for a different tyre.
Tyres that are old show their age first on the inside which is sometimes difficult to identify.
However, all tyres have an identification number which is preceded by letter on their side wall.
It is very important to check that this is displayed as some companies have been known to rub them off making it impossible to identify the tyres age.
If there is no number, it is not just the tyre that is in question but the retailer who is trying to sell you it too!
